Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., voiced criticisms against her own party during a podcast discussion on Thursday. On “The Majority Report” with Emma Vigeland, she addressed concerns about the party’s stance on democracy. Vigeland queried how Democrats were perceived to have lost credibility, citing their stance on “the genocide in Gaza” and President Joe Biden running for re-election unopposed.
Vigeland remarked on Vice President Kamala Harris discussing democracy, suggesting the Democrats lacked the credibility needed to combat significant threats. Ocasio-Cortez responded, highlighting a contradiction. She noted that some Democrats aggressively pushing to exclude Biden from consideration were the same ones who restricted the primary process.
Ocasio-Cortez described an internal litmus test concerning Biden’s candidacy within the party. She mentioned how certain Democrats seemed to overcompensate. While Biden was urged by some to withdraw, these calls often came from establishment figures, according to Ocasio-Cortez.
Despite increasing pressure, Ocasio-Cortez remained supportive of Biden until he withdrew in July 2024. She maintained that she hadn’t seen credible alternatives to Biden that wouldn’t lead to significant risks. Her stance contrasted with the growing calls for him to drop out after a debate with Donald Trump.
An opinion from therapist Jonathan Alter suggests that perceived double standards may cause Democrats to lose trust in their party. According to Alter, mistakes are forgivable, but perceived hypocrisy can rapidly erode trust.
Ocasio-Cortez noted that some Democrats seemed to rally around Biden, despite initially supporting a challenger. Former Democratic Representative Dean Phillips did challenge Biden in 2024. However, he faced strong opposition from Democratic leaders and was considered an underdog.
Phillips stated that his campaign faced resistance from party leadership. After announcing his candidacy, he was reportedly informed that he would not be able to communicate with President Biden or key White House figures.
