Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez renewed her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) after a seven-year period without an active membership. This renewal comes as DSA’s national prominence continues to grow. Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure and a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, rejoined the organization this month. DSA has been gaining traction, achieving several victories in Democratic primaries, including wins against incumbent candidates.
Although Ocasio-Cortez’s membership officially lapsed for several years, she maintained a close relationship with DSA. The organization continued to acknowledge her as a member and praised her actions. A recent statement from DSA confirmed her renewed membership, stating, “Democratic Socialists of America confirms Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a member in good standing of our organization, having recently rejoined in August 2026.” Initially, she joined DSA in 2018 with a one-year membership, which lapsed in 2019.
DSA discovered the lapse after Ocasio-Cortez described herself as a member of its New York City chapter but not the national organization.
This situation led DSA leaders to review her membership status. Originally, memberships required annual renewal by members. This process has since changed to automatic renewals.
Some individuals question the timing of Ocasio-Cortez’s renewal. Critics on social media expressed skepticism about the coincidence of her renewed membership aligning with DSA’s growing influence and her potential presidential ambitions. One user commented on social media, “I’m sorry but I’m not buying this. She’s just now realizing this? Coincidentally when DSA has grown in popularity and shown its organizing power?”
Others took the opportunity to make jokes at her expense. Commentator Megan McArdle remarked humorously on social media about the oversight, “This is LOL in a gently humorous way rather than LOL in a mean way.” Additionally, some users pointed to historical ironies within political organizations, referencing a past joke about FBI agents in communist circles.
Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s deep connection to DSA, debates within the organization continue over a potential presidential endorsement in 2028, with Ocasio-Cortez being a central figure in those discussions.
Her office did not comment when reached by Fox News Digital for their perspective on her renewed membership status.
