The Ohio Senate race is drawing national attention as a key battleground. Republican Senator Jon Husted is facing a challenging reelection campaign against former Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown. Recent polls show Brown has a narrow lead, signaling a competitive race.
Recent data from The New York Times and Siena University show Brown ahead by 3 points, polling at 49% compared to Husted’s 46%. This poll surveyed 616 likely voters between September 22 and October 1, and has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points. Another survey by Suffolk University gives Brown a similar lead.
The seat is crucial for control of the U.S. Senate. Ohio has leaned conservative recently, but Democrats remain hopeful about flipping the seat.
Max Miller’s Congressional Campaign Woes
At the same time, GOP Representative Max Miller is embroiled in controversy. Allegations of abuse from his ex-wife have surfaced, which Miller denies. Husted has called for Miller to resign, citing the seriousness of the accusations.
Despite these issues, Miller is in a tight race for reelection in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District against challenger Brian Poindexter. Polling from Tavern Research suggests Poindexter holds an 8-point lead, based on a survey conducted in early August.
Miller’s spokesperson insists the allegations are unsupported by the legal system’s continued allowance of joint custody.
Significance of the Ohio Senate Race
The Ohio Senate race’s outcome could shift the balance in the Senate where the GOP holds a 53-47 majority. Democrats need four seat flips to secure a majority. Ohio’s seat is key, as other potential flips exist in states with strong Trump support in 2024.
The Senate Leadership Fund, a GOP super PAC, plans a significant $14 million investment in Ohio’s Senate race. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is actively campaigning in Ohio, highlighting its strategic importance.
This closely-watched and pivotal race will have wide-reaching implications for both parties.
