The second week of the college football season delivered unexpected outcomes, including a significant surprise as Oklahoma State defeated the Oregon Ducks. Analysts had largely projected Oregon to rank among the top teams, especially after their playoff appearance in 2025. With key recruitments and the return of quarterback Dante Moore, expectations were high.
Despite challenges faced with two new coordinators, the Ducks were predicted to manage the transition smoothly. Yet, through their first two games, Oregon has not met these expectations. They narrowly escaped a defeat against Boise State in week one, concluding with a score of 34-27. The following week proved even more challenging.
Oklahoma State capitalized on several turnovers caused by their defense during this matchup. The Cowboys executed 83 plays, covering 554 yards, and averaged 6.7 yards per play. Their ground game was robust, reaching 237 rushing yards with nearly six yards per carry.
Conversely, Oregon’s offense struggled significantly. Their offensive line faced difficulties, achieving only three yards per carry and totaling 281 yards with 4.8 yards per play. Oklahoma State’s win was not mere luck; their dominance was evident, making the final score appear deceptively close.
Questions arose regarding how Oklahoma State, a team that had lost 12 consecutive games, could overcome an opponent with championship potential. A postgame report highlighted potential assistance from the Ducks themselves. Linebacker Tate Romney noted that their team’s success was partly due to reading Oregon’s offensive line patterns, which provided strategic insights.

While the Cowboys’ insight gained from these observations remains uncertain, this highlights the possibility that Oregon’s on-field predictability contributed to their struggles. However, regardless of any such advantage, Oklahoma State players still had to excel in individual matchups. Knowing the play type doesn’t guarantee success if outmatched physically.
Oregon’s next game against Portland State will not pose the same challenges, given the talent disparity. Yet, with a critical game against USC on the horizon on September 26, the Ducks’ coaching staff must address these predictability issues.
