Olivia Newton-John was deeply affected by the perplexing disappearance of her ex-partner Patrick McDermott, who vanished during a fishing trip off the California coast in 2005. In a biography about Newton-John titled “A Little More Love” by Matthew Hild, the enduring impact of this unsolved mystery on the beloved singer is explored.
Newton-John, who passed away in 2022 after battling breast cancer, reportedly believed for years that McDermott had not survived the fishing trip. Despite rumors suggesting he may be alive in Mexico, the mystery remains unsolved. Hild noted that Newton-John once remarked that the incident would always haunt her, as the truth about McDermott’s disappearance would likely remain elusive.
Patrick McDermott, a cameraman who had been romantically involved with Newton-John, disappeared on June 30, 2005. He was on a fishing vessel named Freedom, embarking on an overnight trip while Newton-John was in Melbourne. Concerns arose when McDermott failed to attend a family event, and his former wife disclosed he hadn’t collected their son as planned. His belongings were found on the boat, and his car was still parked at the marina.
In the book, marina manager Frank Liversedge said he didn’t believe McDermott disappeared at sea but instead reached the shore independently. Nevertheless, McDermott was in debt and had filed for bankruptcy in 2000, fueling speculation about suicide or intentional disappearance. Despite this, friends described him as a devoted father unlikely to abandon his child.
There were multiple reported sightings of McDermott in Mexico, claimed by tabloids and investigators. They suggested he lived under an assumed identity in Mexican towns, triggering conspiracy theories about him faking his death to escape financial woes. However, there’s no concrete evidence to support these claims.
Newton-John took proactive measures to locate McDermott by hiring Gavin de Becker, a personal security expert. However, de Becker’s team found no tangible proof of McDermott being alive. Newton-John remained skeptical about the rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding McDermott but continued to seek answers.
In a public statement in August 2005, Newton-John expressed hope for McDermott’s safety, asking those with information to come forward. Her search for closure continued despite no breakthroughs.
Newton-John found solace in dance classes after McDermott’s disappearance. Dance instructor Joe Giamalva described these classes as an escape for her, offering a temporary reprieve from her distress.
Throughout the years, Newton-John maintained contact with McDermott’s family, becoming close to his ex-wife and son. Her concerns over public attention affecting McDermott’s family persisted, indicating her desire to protect them.
The U.S. Coast Guard concluded its investigation, suggesting that McDermott was lost at sea. Newton-John acknowledged the enduring question mark over the incident, expressing peace might never be achieved.
