Opinion Writer Criticizes Democratic Party’s Fundraising Approach

Michelle Cottle, an opinion writer for the New York Times, has criticized the Democratic Party’s approach to fundraising. She argues that the party’s messaging often comes across as insecure and desperate. This, she suggests, is not an effective strategy for attracting support.

Cottle gives examples of email subject lines from the Democratic Party that resemble a contrite apology, such as “Can I explain?” and “You deserve an explanation.” She believes these solicitations convey a sense of pleading, which she feels diminishes the party’s image.

She acknowledges that Democrats faced a significant defeat against President Donald Trump. However, she insists that public displays of self-doubt and contrition should not be part of their strategy in soliciting donations. Instead, Cottle advises the party to regain self-respect and demonstrate to voters that they are supporting a viable group.

According to Cottle, the GOP’s approach to fundraising, while often based on fear, at least taps into a basic sense of pride and community. She notes that this tribalism, centered on exclusion, should not be the Democrats’ strategy. Rather, Democrats need to present a strong and confident alternative.

Reflecting on the Obama-era optimism, Cottle points out that though some past messages may now seem outdated, they still offered hope. She emphasizes that Democrats should aim to make voters proud of their support again.
