The landscape of organized labor is shifting in 2026. Although its overall influence has diminished, organized labor is finding new supporters from both sides of the political spectrum. This trend reflects changing dynamics in labor politics.
This year has been tough for labor politics across the country. A number of significant private-sector union contracts are set to expire later in the summer. Notable among them are the contracts for 20,000 Verizon workers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Additionally, 25,000 steelworkers in the Midwest also face contract renewals.
Earlier in the year, Stop & Shop managed to prevent a strike. An agreement was reached with 28,000 food workers in New England, showcasing the challenges and negotiations inherent in such labor movements. These developments underscore the evolving role and influence of organized labor in the contemporary political arena.
