The Carolina Panthers face a challenging situation following an injury to linebacker Nic Scourton. Earlier this week, Scourton sustained a season-ending ACL injury during the first day of the team’s training camp.
Scourton, a 21-year-old and former second-round draft pick, delivered a strong performance in his rookie year. According to Pro Football Focus, he recorded 47 tackles, 37 pressures, 26 hurries, five sacks, and forced a fumble.
His injury has attracted the attention of the NFL Players Association, which is now investigating the circumstances around the incident. Reports indicate that the Panthers have acknowledged the NFLPA’s inquiry and are cooperating with the investigation regarding the practice session where the injury occurred.
A Panthers spokesperson stated that the team is aware of the NFLPA inquiry and is cooperating regarding Thursday’s practice, which resulted in Scourton’s ACL injury, as reported by Mike Kaye from the Charlotte Observer.
Joe Person of The Athletic confirmed that the NFLPA plans to review practice footage from the day of the injury. The focus will be on determining if the team adhered to guidelines prohibiting live contact during the initial five-day acclimation period of training camp.
The current collective bargaining agreement prohibits live contact within the first five days of training camp. During this time, players are only expected to engage in running and conditioning exercises.
If the investigation finds that the Panthers violated the no-live contact protocol, there could be serious repercussions. Potential penalties include fines imposed on coaches and the team, a reduction in future Organized Team Activities (OTA) days, and the loss of future draft picks.
