You might call me a glutton for punishment, but a couple of games caught my attention this weekend. I believe this angle is right for the Panthers taking on the Browns. Both teams bounced back last week.
Panthers’ Offensive Surge
In Week 1, despite the chaos, the Panthers offense impressed against the Chicago Bears. Although they conceded 59 points, the Panthers scored 37. Bryce Young performed well, posting 361 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Typically, such a performance secures a win, but the defense failed to support him. Their running game was working but had to be partially abandoned.
Last week’s road victory over the Falcons showcased Panthers’ dominance. It wasn’t just the offense; the defense adjusted and limited Atlanta to a field goal. Yet, Falcons did suffer three turnovers and amassed nearly 100 more rushing yards, indicating Panthers are vulnerable against strong rushing attacks. Young remained on form, throwing three touchdowns again.
Browns’ Unexpected Victory
The Cleveland Browns disappointed many, as they defeated the Buccaneers on the road. Browns have a history of breaking hearts, but their Week 2 win knocked out 30% of Circa Survivor entries. Was it the Browns’ stellar performance or Buccaneers’ downfall? Likely a mix of both. Deshaun Watson excelled after his poor Week 1 against the Jaguars.
Watson completed 24 of 30 passes for two touchdowns and led the team in rushing with 22 yards. A lightning strike also aided Browns as Buccaneers’ comeback got disrupted. Penalties afterward sealed the victory for Cleveland, leveling their record at 1-1 following a rough opener against Jacksonville.
Despite Tampa Bay’s struggles, Cleveland deserves credit, with Watson playing his best in years.
Game Analysis
Though I respect Cleveland’s win, I find Panthers underrated in this matchup. Despite playing two consecutive road games and Cleveland’s home opener, the Panthers appear stronger than the Browns.
Considering the Browns’ lack of a potent rushing game, Panthers should move with confidence. Taking Panthers -2.5 seems the right call as their strengths align against Browns’ weaknesses.
