The road to the MLB playoffs often proves unpredictable, as the Philadelphia Phillies demonstrated this season. Phillies manager Don Mattingly emphasized to his team that performance in the playoffs is what counts, particularly after their crucial Game 162 victory that averted a major setback.
With an important 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, the Phillies clinched the final National League Wild Card slot. By finishing with an 88-74 record in the NL East, they managed to secure their playoff position. After Sunday night’s victory, Mattingly, who became interim manager following the early-season dismissal of Rob Thomson, reminded his players of their postseason potential.
“It doesn’t matter how you get in, you just got to get in. And we’re in,” Mattingly asserted, sparking celebrations in the locker room.
The Phillies began the season poorly, with a 9-19 start. This led to a change in leadership as Mattingly took over to steer the team back on course. Under his guidance, the team experienced a resurgence, similar to the Boston Red Sox’s situation with Alex Cora. However, the Phillies faced another slump at a critical moment.
As the season neared its end, the Phillies had to battle intensely for a Wild Card position amidst stiff competition. They went into the final game of the regular season having lost six of their previous eight games. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks were pushing hard for a playoff chance.
Despite holding a four-game advantage over the Diamondbacks just a week earlier, the Phillies faced a must-win scenario against the Tampa Bay Rays, who were top of the AL East. Ultimately, their playoff ticket was granted by both their win and a Diamondbacks’ loss to the San Diego Padres, 9-4.
The Phillies’ path to the playoffs affected their Wild Card Series strategy. Zack Wheeler pitched on Sunday to keep their season going, altering plans for the upcoming series. They now prepare to face the NL East-winning Atlanta Braves in the best-of-three series starting Tuesday.
