Two Philadelphia police officers were injured in a shooting early Saturday morning. The incident occurred on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia around 1 a.m.
Officials reported that the officers responded to a call regarding a man with a gun on a porch. Upon arrival, they faced heavy gunfire, as stated by Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
The injured officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgery. There was no immediate update on their conditions. Bethel gave details about the officers: one is a 40-year-old with two children and was shot three times, while the other is a 33-year-old father of five who was shot 12 times.
Following the shooting, additional officers arrived and eventually arrested the suspect. The suspect was found in a tree and was taken into custody. Police recovered three firearms at the scene, including two handguns and a shotgun. One handgun belonged to an officer who was injured.
Mayor Cherelle Parker spoke about the event, highlighting the risks officers face in their work. She expressed gratitude for their service and urged the public to pray for their recovery. Parker said, “I want to be very clear, I am grateful for their service… We think of them as law enforcement officers, but I see mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters.”
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting. Updates will follow as new information becomes available.
