Pittsburgh Penguins’ Risky Eight-Year Deal with Ville Koivunen

The NHL offseason has seen notable player signings. Among them, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a particularly bold move. They signed Ville Koivunen to an eight-year, $32 million deal. Despite Koivunen’s limited NHL experience of 47 career games, he was offered this substantial contract. Last season, he recorded 7 points with 2 goals and 5 assists in 39 games.

This deal raises eyebrows due to the risks involved. General Manager Kyle Dubas took a significant gamble in offering an annual average value of $4 million to a player with modest NHL stats. Although player contracts are rising, such a contract involves considerable financial stakes.

Koivunen has shown promise in the AHL, playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Last season, he achieved 41 points, comprising 13 goals and 28 assists in 34 games. Moreover, his performance in Finland’s SM-liiga was strong. These achievements may have influenced the Penguins’ decision to secure him long-term.

While his NHL performance remains so-so, it is uncertain if this deal will become advantageous. The Penguins may believe that Koivunen’s potential could soon be realized in the NHL, transforming this high-risk contract into a team-friendly one.

Currently, the Penguins have veteran players like Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Sidney Crosby, the latter carrying a $8.7 million annual cap hit. The team sees value in preparing for a future beyond the existing leadership.

Ultimately, if Koivunen doesn’t improve his NHL output, offloading the contract could be challenging. But the team is banking on a successful transition.
