The tragic death of NBA player Brandon Clarke was confirmed by authorities as a result of an accidental overdose of heroin and cocaine. On May 11, Clarke, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies, was found deceased in his Los Angeles residence. He was 29 years old.
Clarke was initially selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft. However, his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick. Clarke rapidly made an impression with the Grizzlies, clinching the MVP title in the 2019 NBA Summer League. His achievement marked him as the second non-American to win this award.
In recent years, Clarke predominantly contributed off the bench for the Grizzlies. Unfortunately, his last season was marred by injuries, limiting his participation to just two games. He underwent surgery for his right knee and later suffered a right calf strain. These setbacks extended his recovery time, leading the Grizzlies to announce his continued rehabilitation in March.
Clarke’s legal troubles surfaced in April when he was arrested in Arkansas, facing multiple charges including improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing, speeding, and trafficking a controlled substance. He was scheduled to appear in court on May 15.
Before joining the NBA, Clarke had a significant impact on the Gonzaga college team, earning a spot on the 2019-20 All-Rookie team with his average contributions of 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
Throughout his professional career, Clarke averaged 20.8 minutes on the court, achieving 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game across 309 matches.
Clarke’s promising career was abruptly halted, leaving a lasting impression on his team and followers.
