Authorities are looking into the possibility of a serial killer targeting a popular trail near Michigan State University. Five deaths have raised safety concerns in the community. The Lansing Police Department is investigating these incidents, which may involve a suspect who attacked people at night.
Dr. David Hayes, a criminologist, explained the difficulties of investigating these crimes. Unhoused individuals often lack identifiable footprints, such as cell phone data or daily routines. This absence of clues complicates finding connections between cases. If these cases are connected, it highlights the tragedy of targeting vulnerable individuals.
Police have intensified their efforts to ensure safety, especially near the Lansing River Trail. Michigan State University’s Department of Police and Public Safety has upgraded security by adding lighting, emergency phones, and more frequent patrols.
One of the victims, Daniel Lusk, aged 22, was tragically found stabbed under a bridge near campus in August. The suspect, Edward Joseph Smith, 23, was arrested on September 3 related to Lusk’s stabbing. However, Smith has not been linked to the other four deaths.
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor assured residents that both the river trail and downtown areas remain safe. The Lansing Police Department has increased their presence across these areas.
During a recent press conference, Lansing Police Chief Rob Backus confirmed that the victims were all unhoused White men, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The investigation continues to develop as police seek to understand more about these tragic events.
