Authorities confirmed several fatalities after a shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on a Friday evening. The suspect reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Police took action after witnesses saw a gunman entering a home.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the event as the worst he encountered in his nearly 30-year career. He emphasized the complexity and devastation of the situation officers are now facing.
This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered. The loss of life is devastating, and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing,Lorah stated.
Reports indicated the suspect fled into a home. Police, including the Erie SWAT team, quickly surrounded the residence, obtained a warrant, and entered. Chief Lorah commented on the severity of the scene, noting significant loss of life both inside and outside the house.
Lorah confirmed two women among the deceased but withheld the total number of victims, stressing the tragedy of the situation.
The city of Erie released a statement, acknowledging the shock and grief experienced by residents. They reassured the public that the situation posed no further danger. The statement conveyed condolences to the victims’ families and promised continued cooperation with police authorities to provide updates once further information was verified.
The Erie Police Department continues its investigation with the Criminal Investigations Division working on the crime scene. Further updates were expected the following morning from Chief Lorah.
