Police Upgrade American Woman’s Death Investigation in Ireland to Murder

The investigation into the death of an American woman in Ireland has been upgraded to murder. Police are now searching for a ‘significant person of interest,’ according to reports.

Jamey Carney, 43, was discovered deceased in her home in Killarney on Tuesday, as reported by The Irish Times and other outlets. Carney hailed from Westchester County, New York, but had resided in Killarney since 2021. She lived in a rental home with her 13-year-old daughter.

The newspaper reported that Carney suffered head injuries during an attack that took place late Monday or early Tuesday at her residence. Authorities escalated the investigation to a murder inquiry following a post-mortem examination of her injuries.

Irish police are actively searching for a man referred to as a ‘person of significant interest’ in connection with the murder investigation, according to a report from RTE. Legal restrictions prevent police from disclosing detailed information about the man’s age, name, or nationality.

Authorities have issued alerts to ports and airports for the person of interest, who may attempt to leave Ireland, with the United Kingdom being a potential destination.

On Wednesday, U.S. State Department officials affirmed that an American had died in County Kerry, Ireland, the previous day. ‘The Trump Administration prioritizes the safety and security of Americans,’ stated a State Department spokesperson to Newsweek, noting that the agency is providing consular assistance to the victim’s family. ‘We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.’
