Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican known for his discord with President Trump, is facing a challenge from Ed Gallrein, a candidate backed by Trump. Massie has prided himself on standing against the president’s policies on multiple occasions.
During a public event near the Boone County Courthouse in Burlington, Kentucky, Massie engaged with potential voters in the lead-up to a crucial decision day. When a young boy offered him Pez candy, Massie remarked, “President Trump hands out endorsements like you hand out candy, just not to me,” alluding to Trump’s endorsement of his opponent as retaliatory.
Ed Gallrein’s campaign has gained traction among Republicans as proof of Trump’s continuing influence over the party. Gallrein, a dairy farmer and retired Navy SEAL captain, is seen as Trump’s preferred candidate to address the frequent challenges Massie poses against the administration.
Massie criticized Trump’s tax legislation for lacking fiscal responsibility, opposed the war in Iran, and condemned aid to Israel as an inappropriate use of taxpayer funds. Notably, he supported releasing the Epstein files, a move resisted by the president.
Since winning office in 2012, Massie has faced minimal opposition. Now, he confronts a formidable contest with Gallrein. While Massie’s campaign maintains a neck-and-neck poll, other public surveys depict Gallrein in the lead.
