Political Shifts in Oklahoma
Oklahoma is witnessing significant political activity as two key races unfold. Governor Kevin Stitt has reached his term limit. Additionally, former U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin has left his Senate seat to become the Homeland Security secretary, replacing Kristi Noem.
Currently, energy executive Alan Armstrong holds Mullin’s U.S. Senate seat. However, state law bars him from running for a full term as an interim appointee. Notable among those vying for the Republican Senate primary is Rep. Kevin Hern, a four-term congressman backed by Trump. He faces competition from four lesser-known candidates.
The Republican primary for governor presents a crowded field with nine candidates. If no contender secures over 50% of the votes, an August 25 runoff may occur.
California Special Election
In California, a special election aims to fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s resignation. Swalwell stepped down following serious allegations of sexual misconduct. These charges include accusations of sexual assault in both 2019 and 2024. Swalwell denies these allegations vehemently and plans to contest them legally.
Georgia’s Runoffs
In Georgia, Republicans face runoffs for Senate and gubernatorial nominations. In the Senate race, Rep. Mike Collins and Derek Dooley are competitors. Collins, a self-proclaimed “MAGA warrior,” has Trump’s endorsement. The victor will challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the November elections.
The gubernatorial primary features Lt. Gov. Burt Jones against billionaire Rick Jackson, with Jones holding Trump’s endorsement since last August. They seek to face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms in a crucial November match.
Washington, DC’s Primary Elections
Washington, DC, is hosting significant primary elections. Residents have a rare opportunity to vote for both a new mayor and a new delegate to Congress simultaneously. The last such occasion was in 1990, a time when gas prices were notably lower and George H.W. Bush was president.
