Pope Addresses AI Challenges with New Document

Pope Leo XIV has voiced criticisms on global issues such as immigration and war. Now, he addresses artificial intelligence, confronting influential figures in Silicon Valley, marking a new phase in his papacy.

Leo XIV released a document titled Magnifica Humanitas, or “Magnificent Humanity,” at the Vatican. This papal statement is significant, offering a religious perspective on the moral implications of AI. It seeks to blend Catholic values with a sector that is largely secular and predominantly American.

“Crucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided: Where are we going? Toward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves? What direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?”

Leo XIV urges that AI be “disarmed,” advocating for its liberation from uses that promote domination and exclusion. This parallels the church’s historical support for nuclear disarmament. Leo articulated these thoughts during a Vatican speech.

The document’s unveiling took place in the synod hall. It resembled a branded event, featuring yellow banners and a video presentation. This production was a collaboration with EWTN, a Catholic network known for its wide reach.
