Pope Leo XIV visited the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano, Italy, on Monday. This marked a return to the site where he prayed shortly after being elected. During his visit, he revealed a fresco showcasing his devotion, which now decorates the basilica’s upper cornice.
Leo XIV unveiled this portrait before leading a Mass with fellow Augustinian brothers. The sanctuary, managed by Augustinian friars, holds historical significance for the church. Pope Urban VIII first commemorated a visit in 1630, establishing a tradition for honoring papal visits with portraits.
The site has been a pilgrimage destination since the 15th century. In the early 1900s, Leo’s namesake, Pope Leo XIII, elevated it to a minor basilica and expanded the convent.
Pope Leo XIV reflected on his 2025 visit during his homily, noting his “need and profound desire” to pray before the Madonna of Good Counsel.
The pope described how the Madonna had guided him throughout his life, emphasizing her maternal presence and wisdom. As the summer break ends, Leo XIV prepares for several upcoming engagements, including trips to France, Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
