Croatia believed their World Cup journey was extended after scoring a goal to equalize the game before the end of stoppage time in the second half. However, a VAR review determined Mario Pasalic was offside, allowing Portugal to advance instead.
Gonçalo Ramos had scored earlier with a precise header in the 94th minute, securing a 2-1 victory for Portugal. This marked only the second time in Portugal’s World Cup history they had to overcome a deficit to win, highlighting their determination on the global stage.
During the game, a contentious review of the play nullified Croatia’s equalizing goal. The VAR revealed Pasalic was offside, thanks to a chip in the ball providing precise data on contact. Croatia contested whether Igor Matanovic had touched the ball, which led to Pasalic’s offside position. So far, ten goals have been overruled by VAR in this World Cup.
With Croatia now eliminated, legendary midfielder Luka Modrić completes his fifth World Cup, likely his final at 40 years old. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo continued breaking records. At 41 years and 147 days, he became the oldest player in a World Cup knockout stage, and after converting a penalty, the oldest to score in such a match.
The game saw Ivan Perisic score first, putting pressure on Portugal. But after a foul in Croatia’s box in the 67th minute, Ronaldo scored his first career knockout goal. He celebrated with his famous “SIU!” after bringing the score to 1-1, delighting the spectators.
Modrić and Ronaldo also made history by being the first players over 40 to compete in the same World Cup match. After the game, Ronaldo, carrying the jersey of the late Diogo Jota, engaged in a touching tribute, honoring his former teammate.
Portugal progresses to face powerhouse Spain in the Round of 16. Spain recently defeated Austria 3-0 and will meet Portugal at Dallas Stadium on July 6 at 3 p.m. ET.
