Gonçalo Ramos secured a victory for Portugal with a decisive header from Rafael Leao’s pass during stoppage time. The game marked a significant moment as Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty kick earlier, equaling the score at 1-1 before watching the end from the bench. Portugal’s 2-1 win concluded Luka Modrić’s fifth World Cup attempt, as Croatia’s late attempt to equalize was disallowed. Mario Pašalić’s goal was called offside after a VAR review, causing Croatian fans to protest by throwing bottles and whistling.
Croatia initially took the lead in the 53rd minute. Ivan Perisic scored following a cross from Josip Sanisic. Yet, it wasn’t enough to secure a win. Portugal now advances to play Spain in the Round of 16 on Monday.
Despite previous successes, leading Croatia to second and third places in 2018 and 2022, Modrić could not steer the team to a comeback this time.
