Postponement of Gordie Howe Bridge Opening Due to Unresolved Issues

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan, to Windsor, Ontario, has been delayed. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced this decision, stating that both Canada and the United States agreed to postpone the bridge’s inauguration to address outstanding issues. The exact nature of these issues and the new timeline for the opening remain undisclosed.

The bridge spans 1.5 miles across the Detroit River, representing significant bipartisan and international collaboration. Initial plans anticipated the bridge would open later this month.

In past months, President Donald Trump demanded Canada cede half of the bridge’s ownership to the U.S. federal government, issuing further demands tied to cross-border trade policies. Since Trump’s comments, Michigan officials and the White House engaged in ongoing discussions, aiming for a smooth opening ceremony set for Friday. Invitations to the event had already been dispatched following a conversation between Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

This project demonstrates strong bipartisan and international cooperation, a spokesperson for Whitmer stated, showing the governor’s anticipation for the upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s resistance within the Trump administration further complicated plans. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the delay, citing technical aspects needing resolution. Despite the setback, optimism persists that the $4.4 billion investment remains on schedule to open soon, as noted by Sandy Baruah of the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Naming the bridge after legendary hockey player Gordie Howe underscores the cultural tie and historical significance of the venture, expected to become a vital economic link. Negotiated by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and financed by Canada, the project addresses congestion issues at the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin has expressed confidence that the halt is a minor challenge. “This is probably the most bipartisan issue in Michigan,” she remarked.

Impact on Cross-Border Commerce

The cities of Detroit and Windsor maintain long-standing neighborly relations, with shared economic interests in manufacturing and the auto industry. Commercial traffic traditionally flows via the older Ambassador Bridge, though recent years saw an uptick in truck traffic on the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario.

In 2025, the Blue Water Bridge experienced greater truck crossings than the Ambassador Bridge, accommodating over 2.1 million trucks compared to 1.8 million at the Ambassador Bridge. Passenger vehicle crossings similarly showcase the reliance on these connections, with combined activity across bridges and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel exceeding 9.2 million vehicles.

The addition of the Gordie Howe Bridge promises improved efficiency in both commercial and private traffic across the border. Sandy Baruah emphasized the government’s role in enhancing the ease of international commerce.
