A tragic accident during a rope-jumping event in São Paulo, Brazil, has left authorities considering criminal charges for three instructors. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a 21-year-old student, passed away when her safety ropes were allegedly not attached before she was launched from a bridge.

The event took place at the Ponte do Esqueleto, known as “Skeleton Bridge.” Police investigator Andrea Levy reported that the instructors admitted Rodrigues de Freitas was not connected to any safety equipment. They were unable to recall who was responsible for attaching the ropes. The lack of attachment led to her fatal fall of approximately 130 feet.
“They do not remember whether they forgot to attach the ropes or who was supposed to do it,” Levy stated.
The instructors were arrested on suspicion of homicide with “eventual intent.” This legal scenario occurs when individuals accept the risk that their actions might result in a fatality.

A video shared online shows two helmeted men launching Rodrigues de Freitas from the bridge. Both instructors appeared to wear harnesses connected to safety lines. The tragic accident occurred shortly after her leap, prompting local police to investigate the incident as a homicide.
Brazilian media indicated Rodrigues de Freitas had booked a guided hiking tour including the rope jump. This activity varies from bungee jumping; rope jumping utilizes low-stretch climbing ropes for a pendulum swing.
Authorities are reviewing whether the operators were authorized to conduct jumps at the site. A lack of safety verification is suspected to have contributed to the tragic outcome.
