The popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, raises concerns among experts regarding rapid weight loss and severe caloric restriction. Dr. Tommy Wood, a professor at the University of Washington, emphasizes the importance of sufficient energy and nutrients for brain health during weight loss.
Energy and Brain Health
According to Wood, the brain, as the body’s most energy-demanding organ, requires consistent energy and nutrient intake. The concept of ‘energy availability’ is crucial, as obesity-related excess energy can harm brain resilience. However, extreme caloric deficits may make the brain consume its own tissue for fuel.
It just shows that the brain is really energy-hungry, and it will decrease its size if it’s not getting enough energy.
For example, a study showed marathon runners experienced a temporary reduction in brain white matter due to energy demands, which reversed after rest and nourishment.
Muscle Quality and Nutritional Concerns
Wood also discusses concerns about muscle loss with GLP-1 medications. Initial ‘lean mass’ loss often involves fat within muscles rather than muscle weakening. However, sustained under-eating can deprive the nervous system of vital nutrients like B vitamins, vitamin D, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for cognitive function.
Recommendations for Protecting Brain Health
To protect the brain during weight loss, Wood suggests incorporating resistance training twice weekly to maintain muscle mass and boost brain growth factors. Adequate intake of critical ‘neuro-nutrients’ is imperative to avoid long-term cognitive issues. Patients using GLP-1 drugs should ensure they receive enough nutrients to support brain health and function.
For most people, I think it’s going to be beneficial to start, but you just need to make sure that you don’t push it too far, that you’re now getting enough of everything that the brain needs.
