President Donald Trump hosted an event at the White House to honor over 120 Team USA Winter Olympians and Paralympians for their achievements at the Milano Cortina Games. These athletes contributed to a historic medal haul for the United States, securing a total of 57 medals, including 12 gold medals. Trump highlighted this as a record-breaking Winter Games, marking the most U.S. gold medals won in a single year and the highest number of medals won outside North America.
The celebration included 72 Paralympians competing in five sports, who brought home 24 medals, among them 13 gold medals. Notably, the sled hockey team clinched their fifth consecutive gold medal, establishing themselves as a dominant force in international sports. Trump commended their achievements, acknowledging the unprecedented success of the Paralympians.
The president also praised the triumphs of the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams that both secured overtime wins against Canada. He expressed admiration for the women’s team’s dedication and resilience in making history on the ice.
During the event, Laurie Stephens, a multiple Paralympic medalist, was joined by two-time Olympian Frank Del Duca, who presented Trump with gifts from Team USA. Trump had previously recognized the men’s Olympic hockey team at his State of the Union address after their gold medal victory, awarding goaltender Connor Hellebuyck the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Despite scheduling conflicts preventing some athletes from attending, forwards Joy Dunne and Abbey Murphy were among those present at the event. Trump acknowledged their contributions during his speech.
Wrapping up the event, Trump received a Team USA varsity jacket and a pair of shoes as tokens of appreciation for an outstanding performance by the athletes. Those unable to attend were already preparing for the next Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2030, which will take place in the French Alps. Trump also expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
