President Donald Trump has disclosed plans to distribute $500 checks to numerous Americans. The administration claims these individuals were “overcharged” for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
On Thursday, the White House released a video featuring Trump announcing the “rebate checks.” He stated these checks would reach “nearly 1 million hardworking Americans who were wrongly overcharged through Obamacare.” The rebates are aimed at providing direct fiscal relief.
An executive order followed, clarifying that the rebates would be sent to Americans in 30 states. This order specified that the funds would “directly refund the Americans most exposed to higher costs” due to what was described as the previous Biden Administration’s “gross mismanagement of Obamacare.” The rebates will draw from a $500 million surplus said to have been accrued from ACA exchange fees improperly charged under former President Joe Biden.
A report by Axios on the plan appeared before the White House’s official announcement. The plan has faced criticism from some supporters of broader federal health coverage. Following Axios’s report on Wednesday, Protect Our Care, a left-leaning group, labeled the plan a “gimmick” and an “insult to working families grappling with the GOP health care crisis.”
This announcement comes shortly after Trump revealed a proposal involving “dividend” payments. These would be issued to voters should Republicans maintain control of Congress after the upcoming November elections. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” Trump declared at the party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, “I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
