Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the U.K. signals a potential end to their Hollywood aspirations, as explained by Eric Schiffer, chair of Reputation Management Consultants, to Newsweek. According to Schiffer, “This is the kiss of death to stardom in America for both of them.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved back to Britain at the end of August. Despite this, they have not sold their home in Montecito, California, prompting speculation that the move might be temporary.
Why This Matters
The couple still has several Netflix TV projects, including adaptations of Carley Fortune’s romance novel Meet Me at the Lake and Major Adam Jowett’s Afghanistan War memoir, No Way Out. It remains unclear if they plan to continue pursuing film and TV projects in the U.S. or need to generate more income for their lifestyle. Moving may affect their reputation in Hollywood.
The Impact of Personal Challenges
Harry and Meghan started their U.S. lives on a strong note, signing multi-year deals with Netflix and Spotify and launching the Archewell Foundation. However, recent years have been difficult. In 2023, Harry’s memoir, Spare, faced ridicule for certain passages. Their Spotify deal ended after one podcast, and Meghan’s TV show, With Love, Meghan, struggled in ratings.
Schiffer commented, “This was cemented with their retreat back to Britain. They faced self-inflicted wounds and showed incompetence in handling their rise to stardom.” Their strength lay in advocacy for popular causes, but their focus shifted back to self-victimization and financial gain.
The Reality of Returning
While the couple has not confirmed a permanent move back to the U.K., their home in Santa Barbara remains unsold. Meghan was rumored for a part in Netflix’s The Gentleman, but the opportunity did not materialize. Schiffer suggested, “She may try acting again, but stardom in the U.S. seems unlikely. Their true contentment was in giving back.”
Prince Harry’s Upcoming Charitable Activities
Harry will soon participate in several charity-focused activities, as confirmed by his office. This includes attending the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards and engaging in the launch of INSPIRE, an education initiative. These events aim to provide educational resources linked to the stories of Invictus competitors.
Additionally, Harry will continue his commitment to WellChild, a charity supporting seriously ill children. As its patron since 2007, he will meet award recipients and their families and deliver remarks at the event in London.
