Prince Harry’s Return: A Path Toward Reconciliation?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to Britain, bringing along their children for an extended visit. This move comes six years after they stepped back from their royal duties and relocated to the United States. Their decision had intensified tensions between Harry, his father King Charles III, and brother Prince William.

Why Are Harry and Meghan Returning?

The specifics of their return remain unclear, as Harry chose not to comment on the situation. At present, Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, has shown interest in mending family relations. His father, King Charles III, is reportedly receiving treatment for an unknown form of cancer. Though many questions remain unanswered, the couple has decided to enroll their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in British schools, with classes starting in September.

Living Arrangements

Harry and Meghan intend to reside in a private, non-royal residence near London. Their existing properties in Montecito, California, and Costa Terra, Portugal remain part of their holdings. The couple will not resume their royal duties. Their financial independence continues through deals with Netflix, Spotify, and other ventures.

As Ever, Meghan’s company selling premium jams, tea, and wine, will continue operations from the UK. Meanwhile, Harry plans to dedicate more time to his UK-based charitable efforts.

Family Relations and Recent Visits

Harry has made previous visits to the UK, mainly for legal proceedings against tabloids, but recent visits have been more personal. The family recently spent time with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House, marking the first such family gathering since the Queen’s jubilee in 2022. Yet, the King only learned of the couple’s plan in the past days.

Some in royal circles find this revelation unexpected. Buckingham Palace follows a policy of not commenting on non-working royals.

Challenges in Reconciliation

Efforts toward reconciliation with the family have been ongoing. Harry mentioned a desire for family peace, particularly with his father. Yet, deep rifts remain with his brother William. Past grievances aired during a public interview and a Netflix documentary remain contentious issues. Harry’s memoir, Spare, detailing disputes with his brother and other family criticisms, further complicates matters.

Royal expert Peter Hunt notes that Harry’s return could improve relations with his father while putting pressure on William for a reconciliation.

Concerns Over Security

Security remains a significant issue for Harry during his UK visits. After relinquishing his royal status, Harry’s security detail reduced. Past visits have included private security. Harry expressed a need for guaranteed protection for his family’s return to the UK.

Whether this return includes any change in security arrangements remains uncertain.

Legal Battles and Costs

Harry continues to face financial challenges from legal threats, particularly involving UK tabloids. Although he won judgments against some publications, ongoing cases continue to incur substantial legal costs.

Recent losses against the publisher of the Daily Mail could lead to sizable legal fees.
