Prince William’s American Ancestry: Tracing a Revolutionary Lineage

Prince William of Britain, the future king, has a remarkable connection to American history. Stephanie Green’s book, “American Crown,” explores the lineage of the Prince of Wales, tracing it back to American patriots like Nathan Hale, a Revolutionary War hero.

Green detailed how William’s ancestry, through his mother Princess Diana, links back to Benajah Strong, from Coventry, Connecticut. Strong played a role in the American Revolution and was associated with the “Lexington Alarm,” tasked with spreading news of British advances.

William’s sixth-great-grandfather, born in 1740, was part of the Connecticut militia. He had a notable nephew, Nathan Hale, celebrated as an American patriot. Hale, a Yale graduate and Connecticut teacher, joined the revolution as a spy. His mission on Long Island led to capture by British forces, resulting in his execution at age 21. His famous last words reflect his dedication: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Green also uncovered a connection between Diana’s family, the Spencers, and America’s first president, George Washington. The Spencer family estate, Althorp, is near Sulgrave Manor, Washington’s ancestral home in England. Historical ties show the families were close, with interactions between their children.

A fascinating ancestor, Fannie Work, adds intrigue to William’s lineage. Fannie was an American heiress known for her independence and scandalous divorces during the Gilded Age. Her rebellious nature and charisma drew parallels to Princess Diana.

Green noted Diana’s affinity for America. Before her passing, Diana often visited and planned to move to the U.S. She considered homes in Beverly Hills or Malibu, drawn by her numerous American friendships and connections.

Green speculated on how William’s ancestors might react today, knowing their lineage’s royal destiny. They might be proud of William’s qualities, including his independence and devotion to family. His ties to American values and characteristics could make them proud of their prominent descendant.
