Progressive Candidates Supported by NYC Mayor Prevail in Primaries

In New York City’s recent congressional primaries, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s group of progressive candidates gained significant victories. They defeated two established Democratic congressmen, demonstrating the strength of Mamdani’s democratic socialist influence in reshaping the Democratic Party.

Key Victories

Among those defeated was U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who lost to Darializa Avila Chevalier, known for her previous involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman, a two-term congressman, was beaten by former city Comptroller Brad Lander. Assembly Member Claire Valdez, another ally of Mamdani, emerged victorious against the favored successor to retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez.

Impact on the Democratic Party

These wins likely provide Mamdani with three new congressional allies, sending a strong message to traditional figures in Washington, such as House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who actively opposed Mamdani’s picks. Mamdani seeks to steer the Democratic Party leftward, focusing on issues like Israel’s conflict in Gaza.

“It’s not just a question of electing more Democrats. It’s a question of electing better Democrats,” Mamdani stated.

In Washington, Jeffries minimized the effect of Mamdani’s candidates, noting that outcomes in a few primaries would not change the overall identity of House Democrats.

Other Political Contenders

Elsewhere, Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, did not succeed in his political aspirations in a race with a crowded field for a seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler. Mayor Mamdani did not give endorsements in this race.

Establishment Democrats celebrated the victory of Micah Lasher, a well-supported assembly member backed by Democratic leaders. Lasher defeated rivals including anti-Trump activist George Conway and Alex Bores, known for his stance on regulating artificial intelligence.

Mamdani’s Insurgent Candidates

Mamdani’s early tenure as mayor has gained recognition from both establishment Democrats and former President Donald Trump. His push for three congressional candidates challenging Democratic party leadership was a notable effort.

Lander, Chevalier, and Valdez, associated with the democratic socialist movement, have committed to policies like abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and addressing socio-economic disparities. Chevalier, facing controversy over past remarks, managed to rally voter support by appealing to sentiments against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s donations to her opponent Espaillat.

The Role of the Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Gaza conflict was a point of contention between Goldman and Lander, both Jewish. While Goldman criticized Israel’s government actions, he stopped short of calling it genocide, unlike Lander.

In another significant race, Mamdani’s endorsement of Valdez over Antonio Reynoso contributed to Valdez’s success despite Velazquez’s endorsement of Reynoso.

Yvette Sanchez, a voter, expressed concern over Mamdani’s attempts to unseat incumbents supported by her local communities.

Upstate New York Race

In northern New York, Trump supporter Anthony Constantino triumphed over state lawmaker Robert Smullen in a Republican primary. Known for strong pro-Trump sentiments, Constantino’s unconventional campaign strategies included releasing a hip-hop album in support of Trump and gifting a statue to the former president.
