A lengthy standoff between protesters and police led to more arrests outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in New Jersey. Political activists targeted the center, fueling unrest over their open-borders stance.
Protesters blocked vehicles near the facility gates. Newark Police officers dispersed them, sometimes tackling and arresting individuals who ignored orders to “back up.” Online videos capture these confrontations. In one instance, an activist attempted to film after falling, but escaped serious injury.
Six individuals were arrested from Saturday night into Sunday morning for rioting and failure to disperse. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda stated that property damage and blocked entrances prompted officers to declare an unlawful assembly. Complying with orders would’ve ensured safety for everyone, including detainees.
Previously arrested on June 1, Allison Wuu, 19, from Fort Collins, Colorado, and Lucas Jimenez, 18, from Hoboken, New Jersey, face new charges. Four new protesters were also charged: Drew Larsen, 28, from Brooklyn, New York; Solomon Dunston, 30, from Bordentown, New Jersey; Rayaan Baywa, 22, from Riverside, Connecticut; and Julianna Wurst, 19, from Old Bridge, New Jersey. They face charges of rioting and failure to disperse, and remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
Miranda expressed disapproval on social media, stressing that no one should destroy property or incite violence in Newark. He encouraged peaceful protests.

Border czar Tom Homan commented on FOX & Friends about out-of-state protesters escalating violence. He differentiated between peaceful local protesters and those engaging in criminal activity.
A reported “hunger strike” by detainees over accommodations began May 23. However, detainee snack purchases surged during the alleged fasting period. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated, “This isn’t Holiday Inn,” emphasizing adequate calorie provision.
