Protests Erupt in Austin After ICE Shooting Incident

A masked protester in Austin, Texas, was filmed spray-painting slogans, including “Kill Donald Trump,” on a bridge near a protest site. The location, close to Anderson Square and Research Boulevard, drew attention following the shooting of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan man, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

Garces Perez, an employee of DoorDash, was allegedly shot during a law enforcement operation. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, claimed his car was “sideswiped” twice by ICE officers in an unmarked vehicle. He was reportedly shot, hospitalized, and later released into ICE custody with the bullet still inside, leading to paralysis on his left side.

The Department of Homeland Security described him as an “illegal alien” subject to removal. However, Lincoln-Goldfinch argued that he is an asylum seeker with a valid work permit. She mentioned issues with his deportation order stem from a change of address.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated the department is conducting a thorough investigation, collecting evidence, reviewing footage, interviewing witnesses, and collaborating with local and federal partners. She urged individuals with relevant information to assist in the investigation.

The graffiti sparked reactions on social media, particularly from right-wing figures. Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA criticized the media portrayal of protesters. Conservative influencer Nick Sortor demanded strong action from federal agents. Conversely, Democratic figures, including State Representative James Talarico and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, called for an independent investigation, labeling the shooting as “lawlessness.”

The situation has drawn widespread attention, with demands for transparency and accountability from all parties involved.
