Reading Rainbow Host Seeks Mental Health Support

Mychal Threets, the host of the “Reading Rainbow” reboot, is focusing on his mental well-being. Threets announced on Threads that he would admit himself to the hospital for treatment. “I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help,” he stated. “Going to the hospital tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.”

He also expressed gratitude, saying, “No matter what happens to me, I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you.”

The librarian and author received words of encouragement and support in response. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown suggested, “If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.” Another user on Threads urged, “Mychael, please get the help that you need because this world is a better place because you’re in it.”

Threets has been candid about his mental health journey. His positive messages gained popularity on TikTok and Instagram in 2023. However, he resigned from his librarian position in California in 2024 after facing mental health challenges and burnout. He even spoke to NBC Bay Area about contemplating suicide during that period.

In 2025, Threets took on the role of host for the rebooted “Reading Rainbow” series, following LeVar Burton, who hosted it on PBS from 1983 to 2006.
