Peru frequently experiences earthquakes, but a recent 5.5-magnitude quake was the most significant to affect the central highlands in almost five decades.

An earthquake struck the Junín region of Peru on Saturday night, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives and injuries to at least 20 others. Authorities report that the quake damaged or destroyed numerous homes, leading about 300 residents to seek refuge in a sports stadium due to ongoing aftershocks.

The earthquake struck near the rural district of Chongos Bajos at 9:24 p.m. It was relatively shallow, with the United States Geological Survey measuring a depth of 6.2 miles and a magnitude of 5.5. In contrast, Peru’s National Geophysical Institute reported a magnitude of 5.1 and a depth of approximately 15 miles.
Historical Context
According to Hernando Tavera, head of Peru’s Geophysical Institute, this was the largest earthquake to hit the central highlands since 1969, when the region experienced quakes measuring 5.9 and 6 in magnitude.
Peru’s Seismic Activity
Mr. Tavera stated that 450 earthquakes have been detected in Peru so far this year, a typical number for the region known for its seismic activity.
Consequences and Concerns
The earthquake caused power outages in towns near the epicenter, leaving some communities without electricity. Luis Vásquez, head of the National Institute of Civil Defense, highlighted on the TV program Exitosa Noticias that several villages remained without power as of Sunday.
Traditional adobe and straw homes, commonly found in the Andes, were particularly susceptible to damage during the quake, Mr. Tavera noted.
