Remembering Dolly Parton: A Singular Icon

Dolly Parton is gone. She passed away on Tuesday in Nashville at 80 years old. Her family shared the news through her nephew. Losing her is a shock, despite her openness about her health struggles. She spoke about kidney stones, procedures, dizziness, and dehydration. In May, she canceled her Las Vegas residency, saying her body needed time to rebuild. Eleven days ago, she recorded a video for Dollywood guests, apologizing for missing a park event on her doctor’s orders. She looked and sounded well, full of her usual humor. Her passing comes a year and a half after losing her husband, Carl Dean, her partner of almost six decades. She mentioned that grief had taken a toll on her, more than any health issues did.

Beyond a Country Star

Calling Dolly Parton solely a country music star minimizes her impact. Everyone knew Parton and, in some way, loved her. She unified people in a way few others could. Parton left a lasting mark on country music, but beginning in the late seventies, she expanded beyond it. Her mainstream breakthrough came with the film ‘9 to 5’ in 1980. This opened discussions on feminism, though she never fully engaged in them. She pursued her path, independent of labels or societal expectations, embodying strength and resilience.

The Beauty of Her Soul

Parton said, “there is no such thing as natural beauty,” a line fitting her persona. She embraced glamor with humor, allowing others to feel accepted. Yet, her true beauty was her soul. Her voice was extraordinary, her songwriting iconic, but her connection with people was unique. She made everyone feel welcome. Her ventures, such as Dollywood and the Imagination Library, echoed this inclusiveness. Dollywood celebrates not only Parton but the joy of being a fan, creating a sense of belonging.

A Personal Reflection

A few years ago, during an article interview with her, I had the chance to spend an hour with Parton. It was surreal and a career highlight. As someone who admired her, being in her presence (virtually due to COVID) was incredible. That hour reinforced the truth that there will never be another Dolly Parton. Her distinct impact spans music, film, and business, a legacy impossible to replicate. Though her passing is profoundly sad, gratitude for the music, movies, interviews, and her message of kindness remains. Her legacy encourages us to be good to each other, beneath the sparkles and sequins, urging us to show love and acceptance in our lives.
