Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has once again filed a resolution to impeach former President Donald Trump. This new effort, announced Monday, accuses Trump of posing a threat to the U.S. democratic republic and its Constitution.
Green’s resolution claims Trump has misused his presidential powers. Specifically, it accuses him of running U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as paramilitary forces. These agencies are claimed to have operated with secrecy, causing harm to communities, and participating in unjustified killings of civilians, including Renée Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.
The document describes these actions as turning the democratic republic into an authoritarian regime where unjustified actions by ICE and CBP are ignored.
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis responded on Tuesday. She stated, “This type of garbage is contributing to our law enforcement officers facing a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against them. The brave men and women of ICE and CBP put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists. Al Green should be thanking President Trump and our law enforcement for delivering the largest decrease in violent crime in American history.”
Despite the resolution, the Republican majority in Congress makes its success unlikely. Green acknowledged the challenge but insists that even unapproved articles can express disapproval and demonstrate active opposition.
Green has attempted impeachment resolutions throughout Trump’s presidency. Although Trump was impeached twice by the House, the Senate did not convict him either time, with the second Senate vote occurring after his term ended.
Al Green, who has served in the House since 2005, lost a Democratic primary runoff earlier this year.
