Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, is facing criticism from Florida’s only Jewish Republican in Congress. She is actively campaigning to unseat two fellow House Democrats in the state.
Tlaib is scheduled to appear at a rally in Fort Lauderdale, organized by left-wing groups, supporting three congressional candidates. This includes two socialists challenging Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, both Democrats from Florida. The rally information was shared via an Instagram flier.
Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican from Florida, expressed concerns about the timing and target of Tlaib’s campaign efforts. Fine stated, “It seems intentional that she’s targeting two of the few remaining Jewish Democrats.” His comments were made in an interview with Fox News Digital.
“It won’t be well received in Florida,” Fine said. “I’m hoping Florida Democrats are more discerning than their national counterparts because the anti-Jewish sentiments in the Democratic Party harm us all.”
Tlaib’s influence on the far-left has been significant throughout this election cycle. Candidates associated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have had significant success against long-standing Democrats across the nation.
Critics of DSA-aligned candidates often accuse them of crossing the line into antisemitism with their criticisms of Israel. They are also accused of sympathizing with groups like Hamas. Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman in Congress, has attracted bipartisan criticism for her remarks about Israel and Jewish communities, although she denies any antisemitic intent.
Rep. Fine labeled Tlaib a “vocal supporter of Hamas” and accused the far-left movement of creating a hostile environment for Jews in America. He commented on the trajectory of the Democratic Party, saying, “I find their direction troubling. The national Democratic choices are alarming and seem disconnected from love for America.”
DSA-affiliated candidates have won key victories over House Democrats in states like New York, Colorado, and Michigan. In Michigan, socialist Abdul El-Sayed emerged victorious in a Senate race against a candidate backed by the establishment.
Tlaib joined El-Sayed and other DSA-affiliated candidates on campaign events throughout the United States. The upcoming rally, named Chomp the Oligarchy, is hosted by groups like Gen Z For Change and Florida Youth Justice Coalition.
Requests for comments from the campaigns of Moskowitz and Wasserman Schultz, regarding Tlaib’s involvement, went unanswered. Similarly, Tlaib’s campaign did not comment on Fine’s critiques.
Tlaib and other Democrats have previously accused Fine of holding anti-Muslim racist views. Moskowitz seeks re-election in the 25th Congressional District, recently redrawn favorably for Republicans. Wasserman Schultz is running in the 20th, a majority-Black and heavily Democratic district, which has sparked backlash within the community.
