Heavy rains threatened the ongoing search efforts for two missing individuals in a flooded cave in Laos on Sunday. This follows the successful rescue of five people trapped underground for over a week.
Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, an early international responder, mentioned to The Associated Press that rainwater had filled the cave up to its second chamber. This prevented divers from entering until pumps could reduce the water levels.
The group of seven initially entered the cave last week to seek valuable minerals. However, a flash flood blocked their exit. One individual managed to escape and informed authorities.
Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand worked jointly in the central province of Xaisomboun, roughly 120 kilometers north of Vientiane. They were accompanied by divers from Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France, and Australia.
Several rescuers had previously participated in the 2018 cave rescue in northern Thailand, which saved 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach from a similar situation.
The rescued men received treatment at a local hospital and were reported to be in good health, as Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie confirmed.
Specialist divers are focused on locating the remaining two Lao nationals trapped in the cave. The search is set to continue based on insights from interviews with the rescued individuals.
According to the rescuers, they have navigated over 200 meters inside and identified five chambers. The five rescued were discovered in the fifth chamber. Paasi noted survivors mentioned a narrow crack could lead to a further part of the cave system. This potential passage may offer access to a sixth chamber where the missing miners could be.
The five individuals rescued were first located on Wednesday and identified as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing, and Laen. The first person was safely evacuated on Friday with an expert diver’s assistance, while the others exited the cave on Saturday when water levels fell sufficiently.
Videos shared online captured the emotional moments as the men emerged from the cave. Some collapsed, embraced by joyful rescuers. Later scenes showed them on stretchers, warmly wrapped with foil blankets and fitted with oxygen masks before transport from the cave.
