Rescue Efforts Intensify for Trapped Villagers in Laos Cave

Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand are working urgently to save seven individuals trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province, central Laos. They have been stuck since last week, after heavy rain caused flash flooding that blocked their exit.

The group of villagers entered the cave on May 19 in search of gold. However, the unexpected flooding left them stranded, as reported by the rescue teams involved in the mission. One person from the group managed to escape before the exit was sealed and notified the authorities.

Bounkham Luanglath, head of Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, conveyed to The Associated Press that the cave where the group is trapped is a narrow chamber. It is frequented by locals looking for gold deposits. He emphasized that authorities have repeatedly cautioned against entering the cave due to safety risks.

Thai rescue personnel joined the efforts on Sunday, as reported by state-run Lao National Radio. Divers are currently navigating the flooded sections, trying to reach the part of the cave where the group might be.

The Laos Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on the situation. Laos, a one-party communist country, often restricts information dissemination, maintaining a tight grip on such situations.
