Eight amusement park visitors found themselves suspended in the air for over three hours on a roller coaster at a Texas park. Firefighters successfully rescued them at the Galveston Pleasure Pier.
Roller Coaster Malfunction
Authorities responded around 5:35 p.m. on Thursday. The Iron Shark roller coaster had ceased functioning, stranding the riders midway through the ascent.
The Galveston Fire Department deployed a ladder truck. They utilized safety harnesses, bringing down each passenger individually. The operation lasted approximately three and a half hours.
Incident Coverage and Reactions
Local television stations broadcast the malfunction live, capturing passengers immobilized near the top of the ride’s 100-foot lift hill.
Some of those affected included students from the Houston Independent School District. They were attending a field trip organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle and High Schools.
The school district expressed relief in a statement. They confirmed all students, staff, and chaperones were unharmed.
“We are grateful that all students, staff, and chaperones are safe,” the school district stated. They maintained contact with the students’ families.
Response and Safety Measures
Pleasure Pier COO Terry Turney commented on the incident. According to Turney, the ride’s safety mechanisms functioned properly, halting it immediately to ensure passenger safety.
The focus then shifted to safely evacuating the guests. Park personnel and firefighters collaborated for the rescue operation.
Turney assured that a comprehensive inspection will occur before the Iron Shark operates again.
