Rob Reiner’s last on-screen role in Larry David’s HBO comedy drew online criticism. Reiner, famously critical of the Trump administration, appeared posthumously in “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America.” It was seen as his “last laugh” against former President Donald Trump, according to director Jeff Schaffer.
The series aired over the Fourth of July weekend. “If it in any way spoils a sad octogenarian’s weekend, then oh well,” Schaffer remarked to Variety.
Reiner and his wife Michele passed away six months prior in their Brentwood home, leading to social media backlash about the cameo’s political context. “Pretty sure Reiner would have preferred to be alive instead of getting the ‘last laugh’ here,” stated one user.
The man and his wife were murdered by their son. He spent his last years on our planet obsessing over Trump and believing every media lie he was told. There isn’t a last laugh to be had. It was a tragic end.
In the comedy sketch, Reiner portrays George Washington, announcing he will not seek a third term. He suggests a constitutional amendment to limit presidential power. Larry David, wearing colonial attire, questions the potential actions of a narcissistic president.
Reiner stresses the need for peaceful power transfer, while David comments, “He could use the presidency to enrich himself and his family.” Jimmy Kimmel also appears, saying, “Are you suggesting that the president would taketh the time to challenge anyone who dare make fun of him? As if he were a big baby?” The memoriam card at the end nods to Reiner’s legacy.
The filming occurred on November 13, a month prior to Reiner’s death. His son, Nick Reiner, stands accused of murdering his parents, pleading not guilty to the charges. He faces life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty for first-degree murder.
On December 14, Los Angeles Fire Department officials found Rob and Michele Reiner’s bodies. Nick was arrested soon after and charged with multiple murders. He remains a person of interest, having requested access to his $1.5 million trust for defense funding, using a public defender when denied.
A Reiner family spokesperson stated, “They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.” White House representatives did not address inquiries regarding Reiner’s cameo.
