Seaplane Makes Hard Landing in New York’s East River

A seaplane with several passengers on board made a hard landing in New York City’s East River, officials reported on Sunday. The incident occurred at around 12:01 p.m. near the marina at East 23rd Street and the FDR Drive in Manhattan.

The FDNY responded promptly, rescuing at least eight people from the plane. Two passengers were evaluated for minor injuries, though one declined medical attention, according to the NYPD.

Ryan Paulsen noted the seaplane, which had taken off from the Hamptons, was later seen upright and being towed back to dock.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated, “The pilot of a Kodiak 100 seaplane made a hard landing in the East River near Brooklyn, New York, at about noon local time on Sunday, July 5, causing a wing strut to snap.”

A wing strut is a key component that connects the airplane’s wing to its main body, ensuring structural support.

The FAA plans to release a preliminary accident report later this week.

This is not the first incident involving seaplanes in the East River. Just three weeks before, on June 13, another seaplane crashed near Whitestone, Queens. The FDNY assisted by bringing a pilot and one passenger onto a boat. No injuries were reported in that earlier incident.
