Robot.com presents a solution in the form of its R-dog, designed to tackle staircase challenges and enhance package delivery. The robot not only aids in delivery but also acts as an advertising platform, displaying ads during its journey. This approach aims to address the economics of robotic delivery, making it more efficient and profitable.

The R-dog Concept

Unveiled by Robot.com on August 11, the R-dog addresses the problematic final stretch of package delivery—getting from the sidewalk to the doorstep. It combines wheels and articulated legs allowing it to tackle stairs and other obstacles. Each leg ends in a wheel for efficient movement over flat surfaces, while the articulated design helps it navigate irregular terrain. The R-dog carries packages, including food orders, and resembles a friendly robot dog, complete with a tail.

“R-dog aims to bridge those obstacles that stop standard wheeled robots,” says Robot.com.

Navigating Challenges in Delivery

Delivery robots excel on smooth surfaces but struggle with stairs and high curbs. The R-dog’s design intends to overcome such barriers, making it suitable for campuses and neighborhoods where robots often encounter such issues. Its ability to identify and deliver the correct package, particularly when carrying multiple items, remains under development.

Innovative Delivery and Advertising

The R-dog uses a cargo compartment capable of holding multiple packages, releasing them through an auto drop-off system. This design could save time as recipients wouldn’t need to manually unload items. Additionally, the robot is equipped with screens for displaying advertisements, creating a dual revenue stream by combining package delivery with advertising.

The strategy of showing ads while delivering packages could increase the appeal of using robots in public spaces. The visual impact might attract attention, possibly resulting in videos and photos shared on social media. This interactive capability allows R-dog to engage with the public.

AI and Navigation

To ensure smooth navigation, R-dog utilizes FieldAI’s technology to understand and adapt to real-world environments without prior maps. This feature aims to keep the R-dog efficient, regardless of changing conditions, by integrating with Robot.com’s existing fleet-management system called REMI.

According to Felipe Chavez Cortes, Robot.com’s CEO, “We built R-dog to run on what already exists,” emphasizing the integration into existing systems.

Future Deployment and Commercial Use

Robot.com plans to launch R-dog commercially by 2027, starting with college campuses where the robot can demonstrate its capabilities in crowded environments. Though specific locations remain unannounced, the company focuses on commercial delivery pilots rather than individual consumer purchases initially.

The dual function of package delivery and mobile advertising offered by R-dog highlights the changing dynamics in autonomous delivery. The prototypical concept affords a glimpse into a future where robots play an essential role in logistics and advertising, addressing both delivery convenience and business economics.
