Rogan O’Neil’s Comeback Boosts Kaneland Football

Kaneland’s senior linebacker, Rogan O’Neil, returns stronger than before following shoulder surgery. After an injury during a Week 7 game last season, the diagnosis worsened from an AC joint sprain to a torn labrum and clavicle fracture. Despite the setback, O’Neil completed physical therapy earlier than planned and regained full strength.

Now ready to contribute, O’Neil’s comeback is instrumental as Kaneland ranks sixth in the Beacon-News/Courier-News preseason poll. As a second-year captain and a third-year defensive starter, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker is central to Kaneland’s consistent playoff pursuits, a feat achieved 27 out of the last 31 years.

Head coach Mike Thorgesen praises O’Neil as a physical leader who loves football. Though primarily a defensive player, O’Neil occasionally plays fullback. His past performances include 63 tackles with 10 for loss in his sophomore year and 78 tackles with 12 for loss last season.

Following the path of his father, Steve, a former high school and college linebacker, Rogan began playing football in fifth grade. He transitioned to linebacker in seventh grade, aiming for a skill position. An NCAA Division III offer from Wisconsin-Whitewater reflects his aspiration to play at the next level.
