This move involved Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and several White House aides, such as Natalie Harp, Walt Nauta, and Dan Scavino. These arrangements were made to maintain security and ensure a continuous line of succession.
Publicly, the plane identified as Air Force One carried Rubio, Bessent, and additional aides like Stephen Miller, Will Scharf, Steven Cheung, Mike Needham, Ross Worthington, and Monica Crowley. The real flight carrying Mr. Trump remained discreet. On July 8, a photograph captured two planes. Mr. Trump reportedly took one to the U.K., while an image of another was released, showing a catering truck that facilitated his covert transfer.
Mr. Trump decided to switch planes in Ankara, opting to leave in the old Air Force One instead of a newer Qatari-donated jet. He claimed to switch ‘for old time’s sake’ but sources and CBS News pointed out the Secret Service advised the change for security reasons. A catering truck discreetly moved Mr. Trump to the other plane.
In an interview, Mr. Trump shared that military and Secret Service officials prompted the secret flight decision due to security threats. ‘Any consequential president has a lot of threats,’ he told reporters, expressing that threats were unsurprising and frequent.
The press captured footage of Mr. Trump boarding the old Air Force One. Minutes later, the catering truck moved to another plane reported to be an Air Force C-32A. The Washington Post initially revealed this undisclosed trip. During this time, the press and staff believed they were on the same aircraft as Mr. Trump and traveled the same route on Air Force One.
At Ankara, press members were instructed to keep window shades closed in the press cabin. Mr. Trump later described the flight as likely dangerous due to ‘sleazebags’ they had to contend with.
Arriving in the U.K., Mr. Trump switched to the newer Air Force One, donated by Qatar in the past year and upgraded by the U.S. Air Force for presidential use. He engaged with the press while flying toward Washington, D.C. The White House announced the Qatari-donated plane would soon receive further security enhancements, as Mr. Trump indicated these changes would be exhaustive.
