Role Model, known off-stage as Tucker Pillsbury, has introduced his third album “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass” following the success of his viral hit “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.” Though Pillsbury appreciates the song, he realized a need to evolve musically after its release.
Until now, Role Model’s career largely revolved around the memorable line from his hit, “Where’s my Sally tonight?” During live shows, he would bring out guests to join him on stage, cementing the song’s popularity. Performances of “Sally” helped catapult it to viral status, aided by appearances from notables like Charli XCX and Natalie Portman.
For his latest album, Pillsbury crafted a unique approach, shunning synths and programmed drums. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Madonna and yacht rock, he aimed to replicate the energy of ’80s music with fresh instrumental arrangements. The result is a collection blending piano and guitar with a dive bar vibe.
Discussing the creation of “Chuck Timely & The Hourglass,” Pillsbury notes the title character emerged mid-process. Thematically, the album explores time, nostalgia, and life’s transitions. Pillsbury reflects on friends moving on and personal stagnation, encapsulated by the fictional Chuck.
Pillsbury’s vision included a variety of influences like Paul Newman-style aviators and a sense of “charming male loneliness.” Musically, he tapped into an adult contemporary sound, drawing on inspirations like Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen. He infused Americana elements into pop music, enjoying the creative challenge.
Pillsbury’s musical journey began in Maine, later continuing at a Pittsburgh film school. His passion for music led him to record and upload tracks on Soundcloud, catching the attention of Mac Miller’s team. This connection eventually led to an Interscope signing.
His second full-length album, “Kansas Anymore,” showcased a shift towards rock and folk, reflecting emotional themes. Released in 2024, it mirrored Pillsbury’s personal growth, notably after ending a relationship with influencer Emma Chamberlain.
“Sally” became a bonus single on the deluxe version of “Kansas Anymore,” becoming Role Model’s biggest hit. As he worked on “Chuck Timely,” Pillsbury took a break to act in Lena Dunham’s rom-com “Good Sex” before returning to the studio with clarity on his sound.
Pillsbury feels no pressure to replicate “Sally’s” success, acknowledging the simplicity of its lyrics. He embraced online buzz but focused on the future. The new album refines the barroom style established in “Sally,” featuring intricate arrangements and Pillsbury’s vocal flair.
Having carved his niche among male pop stars, Role Model finds balance between acoustic authenticity and pop appeal. He manages musical expectations by exploring diverse themes, as on tracks like “Stain” and “Chasing Midnights.” His producers, Mason Stoops and Taylor Mackall, helped steer the project away from predictable genre paths.
Role Model will debut the album with a Portland, Maine concert before embarking on his largest tour to date. He’s expanded his band and left “Sally” behind, aiming to deliver not only viral moments but also timeless musical experiences.
