Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed concerns surrounding President Donald Trump’s immigration reforms, particularly regarding their impact on India. In a news conference held in New Delhi, Rubio emphasized that the reforms are being implemented globally and not aimed specifically at India.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar raised issues about challenges in visa issuance for legitimate travelers. He stressed the importance of not adversely affecting legal mobility, which supports business, technology, and research partnerships between the U.S. and India.
Rubio, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, underscored the U.S.’s appreciation of India as a strategic ally and valuable trade partner. He reiterated that America First is a priority under Trump’s administration’s immigration policy.
He mentioned that the U.S. welcomes approximately one million new permanent residents annually, who significantly contribute to the nation. Rubio highlighted the substantial economic investments in the U.S. by Indian companies, totaling over $20 billion.
Addressing concerns of bias, Rubio clarified that the modernization of the U.S. immigration system is not India-specific but a global initiative. He acknowledged the migratory challenges faced by the U.S., with over 20 million illegal border crossings in recent years, necessitating reforms.
Rubio stated that the reform process, though overdue, aligns with the modern era’s realities. He advised patience from India during the transition, acknowledging that any reform brings transitional challenges.
He assured that the eventual outcome would be a more efficient and beneficial immigration system. Rubio dismissed allegations of anti-India racism, labeling such comments as irrelevant and emphasizing America’s welcoming nature and the enrichment of its culture by immigrants worldwide.
