Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s capital early Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials. Multiple explosions were reported across Kyiv.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to find shelter as blasts shook the city. Reuters, citing a witness, confirmed hearing multiple explosions. The Ukrainian Air Force also reported Russia’s targeting of the capital with ballistic missiles.
Klitschko later noted that several non-residential sites caught fire following the strikes. No immediate reports of casualties emerged.
The attack occurred just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia appeared to prepare a major overnight assault. Zelenskyy wrote on X Wednesday about receiving a report from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko. He indicated that Russia had set up a “massive attack several days ago” and expressed “high probability” it would occur overnight.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of international partners understanding the situation. He stressed that their readiness to provide air defense missiles is crucial for the protection of lives. This appeal came after his return from the United States, where he met with President Donald Trump.
Trump recently announced at the NATO summit in Turkey that the United States would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems, according to The Associated Press.
“First and foremost, this concerns the United States and those partners with Patriot missiles who can support our defense,” Zelenskyy stated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also met with President Trump during his visit to Washington, D.C., on July 28, 2026. “Every partner knows what is needed and fully understands the consequences of delay,” he added.
