Rutgers Nearly Upsets USC in Thrilling College Football Game

Rutgers was close to achieving a significant upset against No. 12 USC on Saturday. An unfortunate Pick Six in the third quarter and an illegal substitution penalty impacted the Scarlet Knights’ performance.

Despite Rutgers’ defeat, head coach Greg Schiano had an eventful game. His reaction after an NCAA college football game against Southern California in Piscataway, N.J. was notable.

USC had possession and aimed to add another score that could have sent fans home early. A referee’s inadvertent whistle halted play, setting up a new third-down attempt. Rutgers received an illegal substitution penalty, moving the ball for USC.

Schiano was visibly upset. On the CBS broadcast, he could be seen confronting a side judge. An assistant tried to keep Schiano from entering the field as his emotions intensified. His frustration led to him knocking over a field marker.

After an incomplete pass forced a fourth down, USC’s quarterback Jayden Maiava completed a crucial 32-yard pass, keeping their drive alive. Ultimately, USC turned the ball over on downs, but Rutgers could not capitalize on their next possession.

Both teams scored on their ensuing drives, but USC managed to secure a 42-35 victory. This was one of Rutgers’ best performances following losses to UMass and Boston College. The Scarlet Knights had 460 total yards, with quarterback Dylan Lonergan tallying three touchdowns and two interceptions.

USC’s King Miller rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. Despite maintaining their undefeated 4-0 record, the Trojans need improvements to secure a playoff spot by December.
